Fear Factor

Diane Arbus' haunting Twins is hanging in the newly reopened DeYoung Museum. The accompanying placard explains that the photograph inspired the twins in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Steven King's The Shining. Read more about the photograph and hear a report from NPR's Madeleine Brand here.

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with the now adult Arbus Twins. They are delightful, articulate, interesting women. They are the last people in the world who anyone would describe as creepy or fearsome. Meeting them made me wonder what it must have been like for them to go through life with a public persona that could not be further from the reality of who they are.
